Abuse ServicesStop users abusing the networkAn estimated 40% of staff internet activity is not related to business. Millions of pounds are wasted every week in lost productivity through staff using the internet for personal or recreational activities. The following are just some examples of the many ways staff abuse their connection to the internet:
More and more companies are connecting to the internet and many allow their staff to browse the world wide web with little or no restriction. There are many tools available which can block URLs (web page addresses) or filter web page content. This can be counterproductive, however, as there are so many millions of sites on the web and many URLs change very frequently, sometimes on a daily basis. More and more sites are using dynamically created web pages with URLs and content that change from day to day. Also, when an ISP (internet service provider) discovers subversive or illegal material on a site that it hosts, the site is erased from their system. However, as soon as the author realises their site has gone (and they're always ready for it) they simply create a new site with a different ISP, and there is no shortage of free ISPs worldwide. They can sometimes upload all of their data to the new address within minutes of the previous version going offline. For this reason it can be very difficult to keep on top of which URLs people are and aren't allowed to view. Blocking web sites and monitoring internet usage are inefficient methods of tackling out of control internet access. These methods can irritate staff, are usually unsatisfactory and can considerably slow down internet performance for legitimate users. CyberSight™ does not block URLs or filter web page content. Rather than simply denying access, it unobtrusively reports on unapproved use of the internet.
With CyberSight™ it is possible to index files in a web site, rather than indexing the URL, so if the address changes you will still be notified if a user has visited that page. |
